HeatShield® System Chimney Liner Repair: Is It Right for You?

If your chimney liner is showing signs of trouble – think gaps, cracked or spalled clay tiles, damaged or deteriorated mortar, etc. – we may be able to offer a durable restoration option that can prove to be more affordable than relining – HeatShield®, a specially formulated Cerfractory® sealant material that can bring your chimney’s flue back to like-new shape.

A cracked or failing chimney liner can stop your chimney from properly venting harmful gases from your home. Liner problems should be addressed as soon as possible, and certified Billy Sweet Chimney Sweep technicians can inspect your chimney to see if HeatShield® is the right option for you.

Three Different HeatShield® Repair Options

For chimney interiors that have defects or damage, but are still largely intact, the HeatShield® Joint Repair or Resurfacing Systems can be great options. For chimneys that show more significant damage – or that don’t have a lining at all (common in historic homes like the ones in our area) – the HeatShield® CeCure® Sleeve Relining System may be the right choice.

HeatShield® Joint Repair System

Billy Sweet Chimney Sweep technicians can repair damaged mortar joints using the HeatShield® Joint Repair System. A unique HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant mixture is used to fill voids and cracks in your flue, and a special foam applicator blade – custom-fit for your chimney – is used to smooth the repairs. Technicians then use special video cameras to make sure that all damaged areas have been thoroughly and properly repaired.

HeatShield® Resurfacing System

Flues with liners that show cracks or spalling (flaking or crumbling) may be best repaired with the HeatShield® Resurfacing System. With this System, the HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant is applied to the entire flue interior (at a thickness of about 1/4 inch) using a custom applicator. Billy Sweet Chimney Sweep technicians will use special cameras here, too, to ensure that the resurfaced flue is thoroughly repaired and completely smoke-tight.

HeatShield® CeCure® Sleeve Relining System

HeatShield®’s CeCure® Sleeve Relining System can be the best choice for chimneys that show more serious damage during an inspection. Like the HeatShield® Resurfacing System, your entire flue interior is repaired, but in this case, two coats of the HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant surround a ceramic CeCure® Sleeve, which is reinforced by stainless steel fabric.

The Sealant is applied first before a CeCure® Sleeve that’s custom-made for your chimney is lowered in and secured, and another Cerfractory® Flue Sealant coat seals the chimney. Billy Sweet Chimney Sweep technicians will then inspect the CeCure® Sleeve installation with cameras to ensure that it’s completely coated and smoke-tight.

HeatShield® – A Proven, Affordable & Durable Option

HeatShield® has proven a cost-effective way to thoroughly repair gaps, cracks, spalling and other damage, and the HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant also stands up particularly well to the corrosive elements that can result from burning various fuels – things like heat, damaging gases, and the buildup of highly combustible creosote (the residue that results as fuel byproducts flow up the chimney and condensation occurs).

To sum up, a HeatShield® repair will allow you and your family to enjoy your stove, fireplace, or appliances safely and efficiently for years to come. Sit by the fireplace, confident and assured that you have a safe, durable and technologically-sound chimney.
